Auto Racing: 400 HP motor, passing emissions, supercharger kit
QuestionHello. I have a 2001 GT that I am looking to upgrade...heavily. It will be my daily driver and I'm not interested in using race gas to keep it streetable. It needs to pass emissions once a year. I have been desperately searching for a way to get 400 horses all motor while passing emissions and maintaining a daily driver. Is this possible? I am open to all sorts of suggestions including crate engines, stroker motors, etc. Please help me! Thank you
AnswerMarc-
I think your best bet would be to go with a supercharger kit. Most are 50 state legal so long as you keep the original pulley on them (which usually produces around 9 pounds of boost or so). Procharger, Vortech, and Paxton all make kits that would meet emissions legality and produce 400hp or so. Plus I suppose there's nothing stopping you from using a smaller pulley when you don't need to do emissions testing. Another more attractive idea for street driving would be a twin screw-type blower like the ones made by Kenne Belle, Saleen, or Roush (to name a few) or a turbo kit. The problem is that I don't know how any of those measure up against emissions. I wouldn't go for a naturally aspirated setup simply because it will require more parts to reach the power level you're looking for and I really doubt it would be emissions legal. Hope this helps.
