BMW Repair: 1999 323i huge fuel consumption, vacuum leaks, oxygen sensors

Question
I just inherited this car. It is a bit sluggish at low speeds and the transmission seems to have excessive drag.  Fuel consumption is higher than my Land Rover - about 13.7 miles per gallon!  Any ideas?

Answer
Mike, look at replacing the air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs. Look at cleaning the throttle body and idle valve. Use a Bottle of Techron fuel system cleaner in two consecutive full tanks of fuel. Check for vacuum leaks in the engine. Replace front oxygen sensors. See if things improve after these.
