BMW Repair: 3 series temp guage, notorious problem, garauntee

The temp and tach do not work on my 89 325i. The temp guage worked for a while and the tach semed to just swing up and down. now neither one works. the temp guage doesn't seem to move when the key is turned on. I did a test on the sending unit by jumping around it... the gauge didn't move. Are my gauges bad?

 You are correct, your gauges are bad.  This is a notorious problem with these cars.  Its possible to take the cluster apart and resolder the connections and it helps (I've done it). If you aren't up to that task, you can search Ebay for another cluster, but there is no garauntee that the new cluster wont be faulty.
