BMW Repair: BLOWER 1996 bmw 328, resistor pack, 1996 bmw 328

Question
the blower comes on when it wants to even though the head unit shows full fan etc.
I know about the final stage resistor pack and its location.replaced once and the part was under warranty.I do not know whether they just gave me a used one because it acted up again after a couple of months.Could the blower motor be bad even though it starts intermiitenly? Is there any other parts in between that could cause this erratic behavior other than the resistor pack?

Rich the only cause I've seen for those eratic fan speed symptoms is a faulty resistor pack. If you bought a BMW part it should be warrantied for two years under parts warranty. If the contol unit goes blank intermittently then you would need a control unit, but that is not what you are describing. When the blower goes bad it usually makes all kinds of racket but it is possible that it is intermittently faulty. I would still try swapping in a resistor first because it is cheaper and easier.
