BMW Repair: !998 318i - fails to start, electric fuel pumps, inertia switch

Question
Clutching at straws here and hope you can help!! I have a 318i E36, drove it to work this morning at high speed 'cos i was late. When reversing into the car park i did this fast too, slammed on the brakes whilst turning off the ignition and pulled the handbrake on at thevitrually the same time, jumped out, slammed the door and legged it!! When i came to go home it fired up then died almost instantly. Fuel pump does not appear to work nor does it appear to have power going to it. Is there an inertia/fuel pump cut off switch on these cars(i thought all cars with electric fuel pumps had to have one). The fuel pump fuse is ok and the relay appears ok. Please help, its driving me crackers.

Answer
Andy, no fuel cut off inertia switch. Do you have fuel pressure at the fuel rail? What is the fuel pressure. Try tapping on the idle valve on the side of the throttle body. One trick you can do is remove a vacuum hose and try to start the engine if it sputters then it is lacking air and the idle valve could be stuck. If it doesn't work spray a shot of starting fluid or brake cleaner in the intake. Again if it starts or sputters then you are missing fuel. Give it a try. Let me know.
