BMW Repair: BMW repair, power steering fluid, bmw repair

Question
I have a 1987 325i with steering problems. There is a bad shimmy when going straight and some grinding feeling while turning left. Also noticed the power steering fluid is full, but a black color. What would cause this? is it fixable?

Answer
Keith,
The shimmy could be several things: Tires out-of-balance, bad tire (flat spot or bump in tire), and worn ball joints.

I'm not sure about your left-turn problem, it could be the seals in the steering rack going bad, or a number of things.  This is something you will have to figure out on your own, because I would be here listing things all day.  I would have someone turn the wheel while you stand outside the car, and listen for the vibration or grinding noise.

 Good luck,
 Josh
