BMW Repair: 94 318IS occassional start problems in extreme heat, airflow meter, heat insulation

Question
Heat insulation is about 90% intact...Yes when i said that it won't turn i meant that the starter would not even crank...The Air flow and the intake was recently changed and had it checked out as ok.

The problem does not occur every single hot day(above 98 degrees outside)but everytime it happened it was under those circumstances. As soon as i pop the hood and let it cool off it starts back up again.....Should i try changing the starter?

Thanks,

Question -
Hi,

I have a 94 318IS and lately when it is extremely hot i will park the car after driving and come back 10 mins later and it won't start.I will wait for an hour or 2 and then the car will start.......When this happens the motor will not even turn. This just started happening the last 3 weeks.I have owned this car for over 9 years and lived in Florida and never had this issue.

Pls advise.

Hi,

When you say the motor won't turn, do you mean it won't even crank? or that it won't fire? Is the heat insulation above your exhaust manifold still intact? You might be getting Fuel Vapourisation caused by the extreme underbonnet temperatures. Try to determine if the MAF (airflow meter) is working correctly by checking the resistance levels ( terminal 2-5 = 800Ohm when open. Terminal 2-5 =2500ohm closed. terminal 1-5 =300/550 ohm)

But I have a feeling that a bit of insulation would not go amiss.

Let me know how you get on.

Rob

Answer
okay,

I misunderstood your not turning over as not firing at all.

You might want to check the wiring on the starter and bridge the terminals with a large screwdriver to see if it starts this way (you can only really check this when it happens again). Check also the connections to the battery as you might be getting enough current to illuminate the lights but not enough amps to crank the starter. It sounds like a connection issue but I would clean the live and earth connections and any others while you are there.
You don't have an after-market immobiliser fitted do you?
