BMW Repair: E30 gauges (esp. temp), temp gauge, right heart

Question
I have an '84 318i that has a temp gauge issue.  Usually reads to left of mid-point (12 o'clock)but sometimes moves to right.  Heart beat. I am told this is a ground fault. Planning to refurbish speedo (345K +) not reliable.  When I pull the heads (speedo and tach), what to do with the electronic board to 1) improve ground 2) to improve connections? Links? Pictures? Advice?
And
how important to replace seals in transversal ("rear") that are not visibly leaking, but that item is caked in grease.
Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Answer
Russell,
I know exactly what you are talking about with the guages.  I actually took a soldering iron and re-melted the circuits that run to the back of the guages.  I one case, it was the board it's self that was the problem, and no matter what I did, they wouldn't work perfectly.  So you might find another lower mileage cluster (Ebay) and use the board from it.

 Good luck,
 Josh
