Morning,

Check the CPS at the front of the engine. It will be a bracket that holds a senor in place over the crank pulley. The sensor looks like an ABS sensor and works in pretty much the same way. While you are down there, check that oil has not contaminated everything as this is a common area for oil leaks (there is sometimes a leak from one of the bolts behind the sensor, and usually you can't see that there is a bolt due to the oil and gunge build-up). If you have a multimeter you can check if the sensor is working by checking it for resistance, I think it should read about 635 Ohms. Clean it up while you are busy. If there is no resistance then it's knackered and needs to be replaced.

hope this helps!

Rob

Answer
CPS is the Crank Position Sensor that is located on the front of the engine at the crankshaft. If you look down from the side of the engine, between the radiator and the engine itself (you might have to remove the radiator cowling if there is one to get better access) then the bottom pulley is the crank shaft pulley. located on a bracket, there will be a small sensor the size of a spark plug. if it is secured by a nut, undo the nut and remove the sensor and test/clean it and replace it. It should be the only thing in the area with an electrical connection on it and will be positioned to read the teeth on the pulley as it rotates.
sometimes they get covered in gunge and are not able to pick up/read the crank so cleaning is the first angle of attack. while you have it out, test it for resistance by measuring the Ohms between the wires. if there is no resistance then it needs to be replaced.

Let me know how you get on.
