BMW Repair: Power Window Switch and DashBoard back light, power window switch, brake master cylinder

Question
Vehicle:
1986 BMW 325 E 2.7 L. a/t

Hi Josh, I remember u have answered my question before and thank you everything has been fine since I changed my brake master cylinder. Now Driver side front window after I rolled it down I am having problem rolling it back. Sometimes I press real hard on the button and it works. Someother time just playing with it and a soft touch will close the window.  What do u thing is the problem? Button swithch or motor?

My other question is the dashboard/instrumental panel night time back light which is on the left side(for the speedometer and another one for gas indicator) is out.  At this time I Cannot see at what speed I am driving and the gas level in the gas tank at night time driving. How do I fix this problem? Do u think it is a simple light bulb? How do I open the front panel cover? Is there any precaution I should  know before I start opening the panel?  Other symptoms are also directional indicator/signal change indicator to the right sometimes the light goes out sometimes it comes on where as the actual exterior indicator is working as I make turns.  Oil pressure light comes on and as I drive sometimes it goes out sometimes it stays on. Heat gauge needs to be tapped on the glass to move it after the engine has started.  Have you encountered such kinds of problems on instrumental panel? Thanks for your advice.

Eddie

Answer
Eddie,
Your switch is likely the problem as far as the window.  I would either remove the switch, disassemble it and clean the contacts, or just buy a new switch.  I'm 99.9% sure thats the problem.

As far as the dash lights, you will need to pull the cluster out of the dash.  pull of the little plastic piece below the cluster, then remove the ring around the cluster that holds it in.  Once you have those two pieces out of the way you should be able to see 2 small screws at the top and two screws at the bottom on each corner holding the cluster in.  Once those screws are out, you can remove the cluster.  You will have to play with it some to get it out, but tilt it down and unplug all the cables.  Make sure to note the locations of each one.  Some could go in multiple locations.  Once you have the wires unplugged, you can slide the cluster out from the passenger's side of the steering wheel (easiest).

Once the cluster is out, place it on a table or other work surface that you wont loose any bolts with.  Remove the 8-10 bolts from the back that hold the cluster together.  Once you do this the whole front will come off the cluster.  You should be able to see the bulb that illuminates the speedo and fuel guages.  You should be able to get another bulb at a local electronics store (radioshack), or maybe a hardware store.

 Reassemble reverse of disassembly!

 Good luck,
 Josh
