BMW Repair: Odometer, 325 bmw, odometer

I have a 1987 325 BMW - The odometer and tripometer does not work.  Speedometer works fine.  Please tell me how to start troubleshooting this problem.

  Since you are pulling the cluster to check the Tachometer, I would check the speedo at the same time.  I'm 99.9% sure that your odometer gears are stripped.  For some reason (heat I guess) they turn into mush after several years.  Literally you can touch the gears and they will crumble.
