BMW Repair: bmw e30, factory radios, roof leaks

Question
Hi Don,

I purchased a 1988 e30 convertible 2 years ago, very nice car i love the drive. A few questions i have for you, hope you can help

1-Can i add a modern cd changer or its better just to put a cd in  dash player?
2-my roof leaks! where do i go without getting ripped, i went to my local shop they want 1800 for after market? Ive patched it but its shot.
3-should i keep my battery on a charger during winter storage?should i start it in winter?
4-my clutch makes a rattling noise, when i depress the pedal noise goes, is this the bearing? it works fine can i keep going like this, its been like this for 2 years!
5-the differential makes a slight zingy noise, should i change the oil or put an additive?
6-it has a slight rough idle, but doesnt every old car do? any tricks on smoothening idle?
7-My hand brake shoed are finished but one of the bolts ate through the back plate(rust). How do you fix that without removing the whole thing?

thank you for your time and expertise

Answer
Congradulations on owning a fine automobile.I have one in my yard at this moment,it too is sweet.About your concerns, the audio depends on how many cd's you want to carry and do you listen only to cd's or are cassettes an option? The factory radios are cassette am/fm,you can add cd changers to them by using an RF system. There are nice ones out there. Stock radios are either Alpines or Panasonic.
Ther roof leak..well welcome to normal wear and tear.1800 isn't a bad price. And it would be a done deal.
Store your battery in a cool dry place. If you can trickle charge it from time to time thats a plus.
The rear end should have the oil change at 30k intervals. If there is a leak fix it and check the vent as they have a tendency to plug up with road debris.
The clutch in these models are sometimes noisey due to the flywheel being a design to smooth shifting. If there are no problems asides from a chattering noise...drive her!
The rough idle can be numerous things..Always start out with the basics..checking the plugs, cap, rotor. But the most important is checking the fuel pressure. You need to know what it is should be 2.5/3 bar.Clean the throttle plates and make sure there is about .002 clearance. If you have to make any major changes the  throttle switch will have to be adjusted also.
And finally on the backing plate guess its time for a new one
