BMW Repair: BMW 325i 1990 wont start, spark plug wires, bell crank

Question
Hi Michael
BMW 325i 1990 4door 180,000miles had been running fine. Shut down to go to store. Came out 30 min later wouldn't restart. Cranked over fine but not a single kick. Towed home. Tried  starting several times over next several days. Not a single kick. Pulled plugs. Checked for spark at each lead in turn. Plug sparked (strongly) when attached to cyl's 1 & 6 plug leads but nothing or extremely weak spark from 4 other leads. I pulled the distributor cap and rotor. They were clean and dry with only normal arc marks on each contact point. Called my local (60 miles away)
dealer and he suggested that weak or non existent spark when checked  by this method does not always mean a problem in this area. More likely a fuel problem he suggested. I should note here that I squirted starting fluid (ether) into the intake after removing the  pleated rubber pipe - no kick. Fuse status checked OK. No shop manual for this car. What do you suggest? Fuel pump(s)? I have lots of experience with cars prior to hi tech emission controls but no hands on with modern computer controlled vehicles. (I'm rebuilding a 1973 2002). I live in the country and would like to not pay $100 for a tow to my above mention distant dealer. Kind regards Bob Warren

Answer
You need to check the reference sensor (the plug is underneath the intake manifold) and the sensor is connected to the bell crank housing and is next to the rpm reference sensor.  It could be possible the coil is done for you can test it.
the fact that it did not start with ether implies that the timing or the intensity of spark is incorrect. get a spark tester ($5 at an auto parts store) and plug it into each of the spark plug wires on the engine at night with the lights off to determine if the intensity is truly different.  my guess would be that the timing is off.
