Question -
when I step on the gas there is no acceleration. Engine hesitates for a minute or 2 then there is slow acceleration. I think the cam sensor is shot but not sure. Would like to disconnect it but don't know where it is.
Answer -
Please read your question as if it were asked of you. You provided no specific MAKE, MODEL, YEAR, ENGINE TYPE, ENGINE SIZE, PREVIOUS REPAIR HISTORY.

I need as much information as possible as a trivial item to you may give me the key to provide you with an appropriate answer.

Sorry for the lack of information.

Make - pontiac grand am
Year - 1997
Engine - 3.1 liter
Work history - I have never had any problem with the engine. I get regular oil change(10,000km) due to the amount of driving I do. i have noticed that when i start the car there is a ticking noice coming from engine. Other than that like I have said there has been no problems.

Answer
If the CAM SENSOR was inoperative, The CHECK ENGINE LIGHT on the dash would be illuminated.

Your lack of acceleration could be caused by numerous possibilities of which I will provide you with some possibilities:

1. You may have an intermittent TPS (Throttle Positioning
Sensor). Intermittent faults MAY or MAY NOT illuminate
  the check engine light.

2. Low fuel pressure and or fuel volume.

3. A vacuum leak in one of the engines vacuum lines in
  respect to air/fuel ratio.

4. Possibility of low octane fuel and or contaminated
  fuel.

Some GM engines utilize a CAM SENSOR and a CRANKSHAFT SENSOR and some utilize only the CRANK SENSOR.

If the CRANK SENSOR were faulty, In most cases the check engine light would illuminate and or the vehicle would not start.

If you have had any work of any kind performed on the vehicle prior to this problem, Look around in the area(s) where work was performed and you might be lucky and find an electrical connector and or vacuum line(s) that were not re-installed correctly after the repair was made.
