Audio Systems: 97 Astro Van Factory stereo, astro van, stereo couple

Question
Couple days ago I had the radio on I got a short static sound out of the rear speakers and then all of the sudden the volume maxed briefly. I turned the radio off and turned it back on, it played music normally for a couple minutes, then same problem happened. Now all I get is short busts of low volume static every five minute while radio is on. When I turn key to off position, radio does not turn off. Any help would be great! Thanks in advance.

There are a couple of possibilities that come to mind.

ONE:  The 12v line from the ignition going to the radio unit is loose and not giving a good connection to the radio (or at the ignition switch connection!).  Correction is to check the wiring/lines and tighten or reconnect.

TWO:  The unit has internal circuit failures.  Needs service and troubleshooting. Probably, if this is the case, a new/replacement head unit would be less expensive than a repair.
