Audio Systems: Car Audio, kicker speakers, power specs

Question
Hi i have a question concerning subwoofers and amps. I reacently purchased two 12'' compvr07 subwoofers (make:Kicker) they are 800w peak and 4oow rms and they are 4ohms subwoofers. So my question is what type of amp should i buy and what make and model would you recommend.

Answer
Don't pay too much attention to the power specs on speakers as they don't mean a terrible lot.  The most important specification other than the impedance is the sensitivity.

A sensitivity of over 93db is good and can be driven by a moderate amplifier of medium power.  These speakers would sound good with anything over 100w.

A sensitivity of 89db, for example, would require a 250w amplifier to sound the same loudness.

I could not quickly find the sensitivity figure for your model, but if you have the original paperwork on them it should be listed. Then, with that information you can decide on the amp to drive them.

I suggest any good 2 channel subwoofer amp with power anywhere from 100w/ch and up depending on the sensitivity of the speakers and the amount of money you are budgeting.  Amps are cheap now days and there are many good sounding ones.  The quality of the system is much more dependent upon the speaker and its enclosure than the amplifier.  Any good amplifier with solid performance will sound really good with Kicker speakers.

If you are building a show car you can be more concerned about the amplifier, but mostly the sound quality will be a function of the speaker system installation and the music you select.

Let me know if you have further thoughts.
