Chevrolet Repair: 1991 chev camaro stalling ,distributor damage, chev camaro, advance god

Question
Hi Mr Sheets, I admire your smarts. I have a 91 rs with 5 liter TBI, 700r4. Recently experienced stalling while in gear only at idle. Idle s fine in park or neutral.High speed operation is great. While ivestigating,EGR valve held no vac, and I relaced. Slight improvement noted, but still stalled at stops in gear. I looked at dist. cap and rotor, discovered that the spinning magnet hub was cracked near in half, and rusty chunks of the spinning vanes rested on base of distibutor.Have you seen this before? I am amazed the engine ran at all. I guess the entire distributor must be replaced, or is there a way to replace only the broken up spinning parts? Thanks in advance, God Bless You!

Answer
HI DENNIS, I WILL ASSUME THAT YOU APPLIED VACUUM TO THE EGR VALVE AND THE VALVE WOULD NOT OPEN,IS THIS COORECT ??? THERE WILL BE NO VACUUM AT IDLE TO THE EGR VALVE,IF SO ENGINE WILL STALL. THE VACUUM TO THE EGR VALVE SHOULD BE FROM A TIMED PORT..MEANING OFF IDLE THERE IS VACUUM,NOT AT IDLE.. I HAVE SEEN MANY DISTRIBUTORS WITH RUST ON THE INSIDE,THE WEIGHTS GET RUSTY OR THE WINDOW FOR THE PICK UP RUST..THIS MAGNET IS THE PICK-UP COIL..THIS COULD MAKE IT STALL AS WELL. IF YOU REMOVE THE DISTRIBUTOR YOU WILL FIND A GEAR AT THE LOWER END OF THE SHAFT,THERE WILL BE A ROLL PIN THROUGH THE GEAR.DRIVE OUT THE ROLL PIN AND REMOVE THE GEAR.NEXT SLIDE THE SHAFT UP FROM THE CASE.NOW YOU CAN REMOVE THE C-CLIP THAT HOLDS THE PICK UP COIL IN PLACE,[VERY THIN C-CLIP] AND THE WIRE CONNECTOR..GO TO THE PART STORE AND GET YOURSELF A NEW PICK UP COIL.
BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE DIST FROM THE BLOCK MAKE SURE YOU PUT A CHAULK MARK TO ALIGN THE ROTOR WITH THE ENGINE SO YOU KNOW WHERE THE DIST GOES BACK INTO THE MOTOR FOR CORRECT TIMING.THE ENTIRE DIST DOES NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED..HOPE THIS HELPS TOM, ANY MORE QUESTIONS LET ME KNOW..
