Steering Column Repair: 01 Jeep TJ, jeep cherokee, lock cylinder

Question
Hello,
I have a 01 Jeep TJ manual transmission with the 4.0 litre engine and had a question regarding the ignition system in the steering column. I was waiting at a carwash and turned my jeep off and could not get it started again and the ignition was stuck in the run position even when the key way out of the ignition. We took it apart and it looks like some kind of little rod that connects the key and tumbler system to the ignition switch sheered off and was broken in the middle. I was told this rod may be part of the steering lock in the ignition and that i have to replace the whole steering column to get that little piece and i can't get it by itself? Is this true or can we get that little piece that connects the key and tumbler to the ignition switch. If so would you happen to know the part number from Jeep so i can have it searched at my local dealership. Thanks

Jeep ignition rod and
Hi Brad:

It sounds like you broke the ignition actuator rod.  Mopar (Jeep) only sells the entire column but our company has a supplier for the inner component you need.
We have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to rebuild the lower portion of a Jeep (or Dodge) steering column.  The removal of the lock cylinder is also included.  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions on our website. Although the example is for a 1998 Jeep Cherokee but the column is identical to yours:

I hope these instructions help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.
Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply order it online through the links attached here.
