QUESTION: will check alternator but how to check voltage if can't start engine?

ANSWER: Check battery voltage. It should be no less than 12. Check it while you crank. It should be no less than 9.6. If the bat voltage drops to 0 when you crank it is still dead. Charge it up or boost it. If the bat voltage stays at 12.6 while you crank it. Its the starter solenoid or starter.

Answer
Hey,

You have a bad ground or power point that is causing the system to go open when the starter load is introduced.  Delco batteries sometime have this problem right at the terminal. There should be absolutely NO battery fluid leaking out of this side (or the neg)
Check battery voltage at the stud on the back of the alternator and use the engine for ground.  Crank the car and see if the meter goes to 0 which it probably will.  Check connections at the battery and the ground at the transmission.
