Chevrolet Repair: 90 camaro RS not staring, starter solenoid, purple wire

Question
I have a 1990 Camaro RS with a 3.1. When I turn the key nothing happens, not even a click. All my light, the horn, and the fuel pump work.  I get about 13 volts and when I turn the key I don't lose any voltage and the light don't dim. The water temp gage takes out only when turning the key as if I was trying to start the car. Would you happen to know what’s wrong?

Answer
I would first inspect the battery terminals for corrosion. Remove both of them and inspect.
Try putting a battery charger or jump with another battery. If it now cranks, the battery is defective or discharged.
If it still won't crank you'll have to check the purple wire on the starter solenoid for battery voltage while someone else tries to crank it. If battery voltage is present, it's most likely a defective starter motor. Have someone hold the ignition in the start position and hit the starter housing with a hammer a few times. If it starts to crank then you have verified it was a defective starter.
If you have no voltage at the purple wire on the starter solenoid, it's possible you have a defective ignition switch or an open in the wiring from the ign switch to the starter. Make sure any aftermarket alarm systems are disabled.
