Chevrolet Repair: My S-10 will not start, port fuel injection, crank sensor

Question
S-10 Chevrolet Truck 1995 4.3 V6 59,000 miles.
While driving it home it started bucking and missing--I had to take it out of gear (automatic) to keep rpm's up to keep it running,(service engine light was flashing) I made it home turned off the engine. Tried to start and would not start.  Had it towed to a repair place they said it was the ECM box-had it replaced--still would not start--they said the ECM box would not communicate with their scanners no codes of any kind.

They did electrial check and said they were getting good spark to the plugs --BUT NOT TO the throttle body injectors. Said had good fuel pressure and fuel pump was operating.. This particular truck does not have a crank sensor according to the repair guys...

All belts are intact not broken--radio etc works...they checked all fueses and said they were ok..

ANY IDEAS ON THIS ONE..

This was my 83 yr old father-in laws truck and I promised I would take excellent care of it--so I do want to get it running again.

Any help would be much appreciated...

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Answer
A flashing Service Engine Soon light indicates a misfiring condition that may be causing catalytic convertor damage. I think the ECM replacement sounds a little fishy. Is this a Chevy Dealer you took it to or an independent shop. My experience with some shops are, they do not have the equipment to properly diagnose the vehicle so they just start replacing parts at your cost.

I can tell you some usual problems with these vehicles:
1. Fuel pumps have been failing. Also pulsator should be replaced with updated part.
2. EGR valves get carbon caught in the pintle causing very rough engine performance and the SES light to come on.
3. Central Multi Port fuel injection units go bad. - redesigned part.(if vehicle has CMFI)
4. Ignition coils now and then.

The fuel injectors do not receive spark they operate off of a pulse width electrical signal. Not sure what they're talking about.
