Chevrolet Repair: front differential will not engage 92 k1500, shade tree mechanic, cv axles

Question
i have a 92 k1500 4 wheel drive which will not engage into 4 wheel drive mode.
the front drive shaft is working and not stripped. the actuator works but the
light on the transfer case indicating it is in four wheel drive does not light
up even though the actuator is activated( i can hear it when it extends and see it extend when viewing it not in the differential.

i am about to replace both cv axles and the upper ball joint on the right, the
boots are split and the ball jt shot. i replaced the left ball joint earlier and
when i did the cv axle slid out partially. would the axle slipping out and me
pushing it back in cause it not to engage the front axles? is it difficult to
determine or fix the fork inside the differential or the sleve that it pushes on
to cause the front axles to engage? what else could it be to cause this problem
which may be easier to repair ie without breaking into the front differential?
or if i have to repair the front differential parts is it difficult for a shade
tree mechanic to  perform?

your advise would be helpful.

thanks

Answer
Hi Chris... you don't say if this is and electric or electric over vacum system...did you check to see if the electric motor that engauges the transfer case is working. if the actuator on the front axle is working that is where i would look...the transfer case actuator is controlled by a module pull the plug in off and check for power when switching from 2wdr to 4x4 if no power then check the module. if you have power then check the electric motor that drives the actuator. some time a tap with a hammer will make them go again. they will get stuck when not used... this is assuming you have electric system and not manual shift transfer case. hope this helps
