Chevrolet Repair: Erratic brake light, brake calipers, cold mornings

Question
Hi Mark. I have a 1998 Chevy Prism with about 100,000 miles on it. Recently the brake warning has been coming on at random times. It will stay on for a minute or two then turn off. It seems to mostly happen when I first start driving on cold mornings, however, it came on the other evening when I had to brake hard at a red stop light. What could be causing this and is it something that I can fix myself or do I need to take it to a repair shop?

Answer
Hi Theresa, The First thing to check is  the fluid level in the master cylinder. If it is low, the front brakes most likely need to be replaced. You might want to have someone take a look at them or if you can do it yourself. After you put brakes on the pistons in the brake calipers will be pushed back in and the fluid level will come back up.

You can add a little fluid to get you by for awhile.

Hope this helps

Have a Great Day            Mark
