What could be wrong when you hear a clunking sound when a 1997 chevy tahoe settles after it comes to a complete stop?

Sounds like your driveshaft slip yoke is clunking.  Common problem will not damage any thing or leave you stranded. To fix this you need to take the driveshaft out and lube the splines that go into the tansfer case.  (rear shaft) if four wheel drive.  YOu must use special lube from GM part # 12345879.
