Chevrolet Repair: ignition does not engage starter, 1996 chevrolet cavalier, starter solenoid

Question
I have a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier.  The only way to start the car is to turn the key on and then cross the silenoid (sp?) wires.

I had just replaced the water pump but only had to remove the alternator wire and that has been replaced.

Any assistance you can give would be appreciated.

Thanks
Curtis

Answer
Try starting the engine in NEUTRAL.

Check for battery voltage at the "S" terminal wire Of which is usually colored PURPLE at the starter solenoid as someone tries to start the vehicle.

Does the test light illuminate at the "S" termianl wire per above ?.
