Chrysler Repair: 98 Chrysler transmission problem, solenoid pack, transmission control module

Question
what woud cause a 1998 chrysler sebring 41te transmission to try to shut the car off when trying to shift into sencond gear? then goes into limp mode.

Answer
Hi Terrance,
I would wonder about a short circuit when you shift into second, and limp mode also will happen if the transmission relay output to the solenoid pack and the trans control module is cut off, but of course it can also be put into that mode by the tcm seeing a fault and setting a code. I would seek a fault code readout of the transmission control module. You could try the ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window to see if the mileage reading changes to show 4-digit fault code numbers. If not then get a free readout at an Autozone parts store or simial nationwide store. Let me know the codes and we'll go from there.
