Chrysler Repair: 00 Cirrus: p0700, p0755 transmission codes, chrysler cirrus lxi, solenoid pack

Question
Hi Roland, I have a Chrysler Cirrus LXi 2000. When I was driving on the highway, the rpms were going up really high and the car didn't respond to the gas pedal. Later the car was shocking when I was almost standing still. The codes P0700 and P0755 are coming up. I took it to the garage and they tell me I need a new tranny and a new computer.. I am an exchange student in CT from Holland, and I don't have a clue about cars, but it seems on your forums that the probably is usual something different. Is the garage right?

Answer
Hi Isabella,
No, that code 0755 does NOT prompt a need for a new or rebuilding of your transmission. At worst the part that is called the 'solenoid pack' needs to be replaced, and if that didn't fix it then a new computer, in that order. The solenoid pack is fortunately mounted on the outside of the transmission and is easily replaced. The part is in the range of several hundred dollars and it shouldn't take more than an hour to remove and replace it.
I would not go back to that garage again, but rather shop around for an independent (not a national franchise-type) shop which has good references (ask friends/find a local consumer magazine such as Consumer Checkbook which may do consumer surveys in the CT area/better business bureau).
It might even be something simple like an open or short-circuited wire between the 2-4 solenoid in pack that is connected to the computer, or the ground wire on the computer might be disconnected. So ask the shop to check for those two wiring fault possibilities before doing anything about replacing the pack itself. Then replace the pack if the wiring is OK, and ideally that will solve the problem.
Roland
PS the 0700 code mere alerts you to look for a specific code number, such as the 0755, and that is all it means.
