Chrysler Repair: cracked head gasket, head gasket problems, head bolts

Question
I have an 08 Sebring which I have taken VERY good care of.  It has just over 50 thousand miles on it and now there is oil in the coolant reservoir.  They say it's a cracked head gasket?  Do the sealants you can buy work?  Is this a common failure with this car?  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Terri,
I don't have any statistics on the frequency of head gasket problems with recent models. Is the leak really significant: is the oil also 'milky' for example? It is possible that stop leak will work for at least some time, so it is worth trying.
Another possible approach would be to loosen the head bolts about 3/4 turn and then retorque them in the specified amount and pattern on the possibility that the problem has to do with uneven  bolt torques that is allowing leakage, rather than a frank tear in the gasket. Let me know which engine you have and I can give you the details on the torque pattern and what needs to be done to access the bolts. If this is a V-6 is it known which cylinder bank has the problem?
