Chrysler Repair: 2002 Chrysler T & C Van: clockspring replacement, postal mail, clockspring

Question
The air-bag light stays on.  The dealer states that a spring must be replaced.  The dealer gives a very expensive cost of repair. Is that spring connected to the light?
If so, what must be disassembled to repair it?  What are the mistakes to avoid?
Thanks Leroy Adamski

Answer
Hi Leroy,
If the dealer did a fault code readout of the body computer that showed the problem was the clockspring connector then it does have to be replaced to solve the problem indicated by the warning light. There might be a different connection problem but the clockspring is the most likely. You might check the warranty/recall situation at Chrysler.com or at the US Traffic Safety Commission (NHTSA.gov) to see if there was a recall on the clockspring because of too frequent failure and thus possibly getting the corporation to pay for the replacement.
In any case, you have to remove the airbag and the steering wheel to get to the clockspring. There are about 6 pages in the manual that covers those procedures. If you would like I can xerox copy and postal mail you those pages. The main mistake to avoid is accidentally setting off the airbag due to a spark/short circuit of the wiring as you do it.
If you would reimburse me with a couple of 42 cent stamps after you get the pages I would be appreciative. Let me know your postal mailing address.
