Chrysler Repair: fog lights dont work: 02 mini-van, fog light bulbs, lamp sockets

Question
QUESTION: replaced the fog light bulbs that were not working. still don't work. Fuse looks ok. Town & Country 2002 model. what else could be wrong?

ANSWER: Hi Laurie,
The fuse may have a subtle crack in the wire rather blown. So remove fuse #1 in the box under hood along the left inner fender to see if that might be the case. It is 20A size. You might even try switcbing it with another fuse of the same sized just to be sure. Then there is an electrical relay for the current to be passed along to the lammps. It is the 5th one from the front on left edge of box (it is the relay next to fuse #8). When a helper tries the fogs see if you can feel it vibrate momentarily as the switch closes; it should. If it doesn't try substituting another relay with the same part number from elsewhere in the box to see if that solves the problem (which would say the original relay was no good). If none of that works, then the headlamp switch would be the next suspect which will requires further details.

QUESTION: actually we tried the fuse switching and the relay switching and so I guess we are on to the headlamp switch, can you give further details?

Answer
Hi Laurie,
Does the fog lamp 'on' indicator show on the dash? If so, then the switch itself is probably OK and so I would then ask if you feel the relay click. If you do then the ground connection from the bulb sockets is perhaps 'open'. You would want to have an ohmmeter or continuity checker to verify whether the black/orange or black/yellow wires from the lamp socket is grounded or not. And also check whether there is 12V on the white/orange or white/yellow wires that are at the lamp sockets, as the case may be (left or right side) which would verify that the switch/relay/balance of voltage supply circuit to the bulb is OK.
If the indicator doesn't light, then I would test the resistance between pin 6 and 11 of the headlamp switch (after removing its multi-pin plug). With the headlamps in the "on" position that should read 788-809 ohms; if you then turn on the fog lamps switch the reading should increase to 1171-1200 ohms. If not, then the internal fog switch contacts are dirty or corroded and you could try spraying some electrical contact cleaner through any cracks in the switch housing.
Beyond that, there are additional components involving two modules that involve the logic of turning 'on' the relay as the result of the headlamp switch changing the resistance of the circuit, but I would not get into that yet.
