Chrysler Repair: Overheating LHS, temp gauge, correct temp

Question
QUESTION: My 99 LHS overheats and makes a loud screeching noise when I turn on the defrost or ac unit. What may the problem be?

ANSWER: Hi William,
The loud screeching sound may well be the AC compressor is locked up, so take a look at whether the pulley is turning on that unit when you ask for AC or not. If it turns, but the belt slips, then you need to tighten/replace the belt, if it doesn't turn then the compressor needs to be replaced. Tell me more about the overheating symptoms.

QUESTION: Thanks for the previous advice,as for the overheating,on a few occasions the temp gauge would reach the red/hot mark on my dash board, but for the most part it goes to the mid range level now.Under the hood, the plastic tank that I put my coolant in is extremely hot, you can see and hear the coolant boiling and steam seeps out too. It doesn't have to be a long drive at all, usually after5-10 minutes of driving,i'm allready heated. thanks for your help

Answer
Hi William,
The bottom line is the temp gauge. If it stays around 1/3 to 2/3 scale then the engine is being kept at the correct temp. The overflow bottle should be filled to the "cold" line before you start off. Any expansion from the system into the bottle will be hot so that is nothing unusual. You may not have any coolant ballast in the bottle when it is cold which makes it appear more of an issue than it is. Only when thete is excessive steaming/boil-over from the bottle would I worry about it.
