Chrysler Repair: replacing body control computer, drb iii, vtss

Question
I am a Locksmith and one of my customers replaced the body control computer to a 98 Town and Country. After doing so the ignition key would no longer start the car. My Question is Do the keys simply need to be reprogrammed? Also does the body control computer need to be matched or reprogrammed to any other components like the instrument Cluster? Thanks for the help. Joe

Answer
Hi Joe,
There is the question about the compatibility of the replacement bcm with the pcm as far as the presence of a security system. Was that verified when the bcm was purchased? If by chance a DRB III reader were available the bcm info should show "NS Premium w/VTSS". Let us assume that is the case.
Make sure all the doors and hoods are closed. Make sure the liftgate is closed. Open the driver's door. Remove the ignition key (but keep it in hand). Lock the door with the power door lock switch. Close the driver door.
If the insturment panel light lamp flashes the VTSS systen us operational and verified. If not then there is a problem that has to be sorted out by means of a Chrysler DRB III system or equivalent.
Are you certain that the vehicle has the SKIM feature? My '98 van manual doesn't discuss it. I believe if the bcm is changed that somehow one of the keys has to be recognized by the bcm. It may also be the case that the bcm has to be programmed with the VIN of the vehicle it has be installed in, and again that takes the DRB III.
For all these complications I believe you need to contact a dealer and explain what is going on.
