Chrysler Repair: Code 456 Small E-Vap Leak, smog test station, gasket seal

Question
Hi Roland,

I took my 2001 LHS to the dealer and they checked the code "456", they are saying I need to replace the complete evap system. Cost $650.00 They are saying they can't fine the leak anywhere, are there any alternatives?

Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,
Did they/you check the fuel cap gasket seal?
I assume that they spent some time looking for holes/cracks/leaking seals, evidence of component damage/or incorrect routing of hoses/wetness/fuel odor.
Those are the routine approaches to this code.
There is a test tool, Miller #8494 Evaporative Emission Leak Detector (eeld), that uses a special smoke to fill the system, then look for leaks with a special white light (#8404-ccl). There is also a residual dye left behind by the smoke that is detected using an ultraviolet light viewed thru yellow goggles to find evidence of the leak location. So if the dealer doesn't have this system I would inquire of other dealers/independent shops to find one that has such a leak searching device. If that were available it might well find the leak rather than having to replace the system, which seems extreme. Miller Tools is a company that makes test tool for Chrysler and other manufacturers.
But first, check the gas cap and its seal, which can be done at any smog test station if they are required in your state.
