Chrysler Repair: Bad Odometer Memory Chip 87 NYer, electronic supply stores, chiltons manual

Question
This is a follow up question to my 1/28 query titled "Electronic Odometer Failure".  Its an "87" Chrysler New Yorker 4 door 2.2 liter turbo.
I performed the test operations you suggested (fuses 7 and 13 were good) and got a "4" displayed in the speedo and "fail" in the odo which indicates a bad memory chip.  My Chiltons Manual says that later model cars sometimes have this chip in the "body computer" instead of in the instrument cluster display.  I take it the body computer is the one in the passenger front seat footwell or is it the computer by the battery?
The Chiltons also mentioned that a faulty odo memory chip at the cluster needs to be removed with a special Chrysler tool (#C-4817}.  Any idea where the memory chip would be on my car.....and can such a chip be purchased and installed and reprogrammed with the appropriate mileage showing by a Chrysler Tech these days?

Answer
Hi Ralph,
The memory chip is plugged into the cluster proper. The tool is nothing special, just a chip tweezer available at any electronic supply stores, used to grasp the ends of the chip to pull it from its socket. I am not clear as to whether the mileage can be reprogrammed into the chip. It appears there is no interface digital bus wired into the vehicle, as is the case when the 'body computer' came onto the scene, so if it were programmable it would have to be via the diagnostic reader equipped with a plug that fits the chip.
You could check with a dealer for the availability of the chip, or look for a used cluster at a wrecking yard.
