Chrysler Repair: fuel gauge malfunction: 2000 Cirrus, fuel level sender, gauge system

Question
I have a 2000 Cirrus.  The fuel gauge goes up and down, while the low fuel indicator light goes on and off.  This happens when the engine is hot or cold, when stopped or while moving.  Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Answer
Hi Susan,
The chances are it is the fuel level sender unit in the tank rather rather than the gauge on the dash. But the fuel gauge system also includes the body control module and the digital data bus which convert the variable (depending upon fuel amount) electrical current from the sender into a digital data item and then sends that to the cluster in digital format. There are a set of tests to sort out what the problem is using a volt-ohm meter. It is described on 4 pages of the body diagnostic manual. I can xerox and postal mail those two you. If you would send me back two 42 cent stamps after you receive them that would cover my costs. If you would like them, use the "thank and rate" tab to enter an address.
