Question
HEllo,

I have a 96 chrysler town and country lxi, 3.8lt, 120k miles. the transmission slips while trying to go in to over drive also will stick in 3rd gear(also wont manually shift sometimes. I flushed the trans put atf+4 in it,changed the shift solenoid, I m all out of ideas please help.

Answer
Hi Dan,
The "sticking" is actually in 2nd gear, not 3rd, and indicates there is a problem which has been logged as a fault code in the trans controller memory. The best approach at this point would be to get a fault code readout from the transmission controller. '96 is right at the crossover point from OBD-I to OBD-II system of fault codes, so I can't be sure which plug type you have under the dash near the steering wheel. If it is blue and has 6 pin sockets, then it is the earlier style and will need to be read probably with a Chrysler DRB II reader. If it has the 16 pin plug then it can be read with any time of reader. If you have the former, a dealer or a good quality independent (non-franchise) shop can do it. If the latter, then you can probably get a free readout at Autozone parts store or a lower cost readout at any shop that does readout (maybe arount $40). Ask for the code numbers, what their name is/are, what that means, and how much to fix. Then write back and we can compare that to what the Chrysler shop manual says.
