Chrysler Repair: 1996 Dodge Neon Stalling at Idle, fuel air mixture, exhaust gas recirculation valve

Question
1996 Dodge neon stalls at stops. It runs fine above idle, but stalls when throttle returns to idle. I can sometimes save a stall by working the gas pedal at stops. I took it out on the highway for a run and then back to stop and go traffic and the problem stopped until I started it the next morning. Only codes I get are (The battery was disconnected recently and the 55 end of codes)
I looked for vacuum leaks.
The problem started right after I gave the AC a shot of r-134 This is a coincidence isn't it?
Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Lou,
I don't see how the a/c recharge would affect the idle unless the a/c wasn't working before you did the recharge, and now it is and that the signal to raise the idle is not being transmitted to the automatic idle speed motor when you have the a/c in service.
The most common reason for no idle quality or no starting when the engine otherwise runs fine is that the exhaust gas recirculation valve is stuck ajar. You didn't mention which engine but in any case look for a pipe that runs from the exhaust manifold to the intake at the the throttle body and along that pipe you will find a valve that has a round actuator that is vacuum hose driven, on its top. Between the actuator and the valve body there is a saddle with a rod inside of it which is the valve stem. You can often resolve the stickiness by spraying some solvent on the stem where it enters the valve body and working the valve open and closed by means of the slot in the stem using a flat blade screwdriver tip. It should resist opening due to a spring and the spring action should close the valve firmly. Then start the engine and vary the rpm from idle to 2500 rpm  and back to make sure the stem moves on its own accord. That may be the answer. If the valve is stuck ajar it results in the dilution of the fuel/air mixture which the engine can't tolerate at idle.
