Classic/Antique Car Repair: Carb replacement, throttle linkage, vacuum lines

Question
I have a 64 chevyII with a str8 6 250 with a rockchester single barrel thats shot. I am replacing it with a new one. Can you explain to me how to exchange old for new. I've never changed one befor.

Answer
Well first let me ask you, Is your 64 a numbers correct car? all original? if so then I would have carb rebuilt to keep the value up call SMI out of Cali 714-843-9169 about 9:30 pacific time.

IF your not worried about old carb then Advance auto or Auto zone should have replacement but before you swap carbs MAKE note of your idle speed screw and mixture screw
Idle speed is located on side of carb where throttle linkage hooks up, count turns...and idle is in front of carb down low.

note position of slot of screw then turn in half increments at a time untill it stops. it may be adjusted at 1 and 3/4 turns but write it down.

To Replace just undo the fuel line, linkage and make note of vacuum lines, undo bolts, replace gasket, reinstall carb and set the screws.

hope this helps
