Dodge Repair: 2000 Caravan Power Windows, dodge caravan, circut breaker

Question
Hi Steve:

I have a 2000 Dodge Caravan.  About a year and a half ago, I noticed that if I used the "auto" switch on the driver side window, the window would only go up part way and then stop.  Originally, the problem only occured if I clicked the switch down far enough to activate the "auto" control.  It would go up about halfway and quit.  I would have to wait about 5 minutes or so to get it to go up the rest of the way. So, the easy way to avoid the problem (not get it fixed) was to make sure not to activate the "auto" switch.  Great plan!  Anyway, here I am a year and a half later with a power window that is temperamental at best (no more drive through car washes).  The window will literally take hours to put back up.  It goes up centimeters at a time.  It goes down fine, but won't come back up.  Now it doesn't matter if you activate the "auto" switch. What's really weird is that sometimes it will go up about halfway at a time, others it moves so little that it is undetectable to the naked eye. My husband pulled the door apart, but couldn't find anything with the wiring (I thought maybe it was some kind of weird short).  I understand the switch has some kind of reset on it, and I'm not sure if this is the problem. Oh, by the way, the passenger side window works just fine as do the rear windows.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

Answer
Nancy,

Heres your chance to show your husband a little something,

The problem is in the drivers motor or the window regulator.  The reason I think this is,
the motor is
overheating the system and trips the circut breaker. once the system cools down the breaker resets itself and works untill it overheats again. this may be only a microsecond but it still overheating,.

From what you have told me it sounds like the motor is overheating.  You may be able to lube the glass tracks with WD40 and this will make the glass a little easer to raise(less stress on the motor)

You can remove the motor and see if it still acts the same if so then it is sure to be the motor. if the motor works fine when removed then check the glass slides and the regulator (the levers and cables ) and make sure they move freely.

Good luck,

Steve
