Eagle Repair: Exhaust System Help, eagle talon tsi, wheel drive car

I am looking at buying a 1992 eagle talon TSI all wheel drive car. The current owner never had to take the car for emissions, and decided to alter the exhaust system. He has a 3" down pipe, with a 3" catalytic converter eliminator pipe which then trails to a 2.5" cat-back exhaust system. THERE IS NO CATALYTIC CONVERTER! I need this car to pass emissions, can you recommed a specific catalytic converter I should buy? Also, is this a do it myself project, or should i take this somewhere and have it done? I thought I might be able to cut out part of the 3" cat-eliminator pipe, and weld or clamp in a 3" catalytic converter. Let me know what you think, and how you would handle this. You got yourself in a real mess. If the exhaust has been altered, Who knows what else has been altered. Your pretty well at a guessing game at this point. Even if you replaced the whole exhaust system back to the original factory specs it still may not pass the emissions test due to other emissions modifications that he most likely has made to the system.

Even if you take it into an exhaust shop and they spend $700.00 replacing the exhaust system and then you take it for emissions inspection there is a very great possibility that it will not pass. So, Now you have to find a repair facility that is willing to take on this MAJOR task of figuring out what else has been modified with the emissions sytsem which, IF you can get a facility to take on this mess, Could wind up costing you hundreds of dollars in replacing parts that the previous owner removed and or altered.

I used to take on these types of cases, But the TIME and parts costs were getting very very costly and the customer was getting mad at me for all the labor time, Because you could spend days reworking all the vacuum lines, sensors, emissions hoses, etc, etc.

I seriously doubt that you will get anyone to take on this disaster except for having someone replace the entire exhaust system and then if it does not pass emissions your stuck trying to find a facility willing to take it from there.

I honestly don't have an answer for you without actually seeing the car and seeing what has been altered.

Personally, I would try and sell the car AS IS and get out of it all together as I can see you spending $2,000.00 or MORE trying to get it to pass emissions.

This is why I no longer take on these disasters anymore, To expensive and to time consuming for the customer who does not realize all the work involved.
