QuestionI have a 1994 Eagle Talon DL. It's a 1.8L 4 cyl. stick shift.
My main question is, is it possible to replace the 1.8L engine with a 2.0L engine from the same model year? (Take the nonturbo engine out of a 1994 2.0L Talon and drop it in my 1994 Eagle Talon that was a 1.8L, with a minimum of hassle). Main reason I am asking is, the 2.0L cars have a different tranny and several other components that differ from the 1.8L model. Would it be necessary to replace those components?
Next, the car misses in idle and at constant velocity (and rarely misses in wide open throttle). I know the spark plugs are fine, so what could be some other reasons for that?
The idle speed sometimes oscillates as well, does not stay at a constant RPM even though everything else is held constant (wipers off, rear defrost and AC off, etc.). I have heard the problem can stem from a bad battery (but battery was just replaced, although it was discharged before replacing the alternator) or bad fuel pump all the way to vacuum losses in the hoses. Do you know what the most likely candidate would be? Thanks for any help.
AnswerNO, ABSOLUTELY NOT can you SIMPLY install a different size engine without experiencing numerous problems such as transmission adaptation (won't fit or operate correctly) as well as numerous other components.
Your vehicle is wired and the computer is designed SPECIFICALLY for the 1.8L engine.
Although the electrical connectors will fit the computer there are wiring connections in DIFFERENT locations within the connectors.
Also the computer is designed for the 2.0L and is NOT compatable for the 1.8L.
Unless you have BOTH electrical schematics and a vast amount of electrical trouble shooting I do NOT recommend that you make this change in engines.
Most loping idles are caused by vacuum leaks and or a black residue buildup on the throttle plate(s) and within the air intake idle passage of which both can be cleaned via an aerosol cleaning agent available at any auto parts store.
