Ford Repair: Ford H.O. 302 convert to carb from F.Inject, holley double pumper, lincoln mark vii

Question
Hi Steve,
I'm hoping you can answer the following:
My cousin (who is a Ford buff, and is a mechanic, who currently works at the local transit authority) wants to convert the presently fuel injected 89 H.O. 302 roller engine from a Lincoln Mark VII (with O.D. automatic trans)to 4 barrel carburator set up, for use in another vehicle with same trans.
What manufacturer and model of intake manifold would you recommend?
What is the best carburator manufacturer and model to use?
What is the best ignition system that you would recommend? example: duraspark

Thanks for takingh time out of your busy schedule to help!
Colin

Answer
Colin-

Ford the manifold I would go with a Weiand Stealth manifold.  It's a raised dual plane design so it works really well in the low-end range and mid range while not giving up in the top end.  As for the carb, I would go with a 600cfm Holley double pumper.  Easily available parts and it'll do a good all-around job.  For ignition, I would go with an MSD 6A box and an MSD distributor.  Fairly simple wiring, but you'll need to make some slight wiring changes if you want to run a tachometer.  One note, an AOD or similar automatic 4spd transmission will NOT work with a carb.  Carbs are designed for older transmissions with kickdown linkages, while AODs and similar trannies use TV (throttle valve) linkages.  Once upon a time a company called Sacramento Mustang sold adapters for Holleys with TV linkage transmissions.  They may still sell them...I honestly haven't checked in a while.  Hope this helps.
