Hyundai Repair: hyundai 1996 car radio code dc283, radio code, starter motor

Question
Hi I recently had my starter motor changed and the radio is asking for a code which I dont have. I spoke to a dealer who refered me to the original purchase dealer who in turn offered to get me the quote for $100 as it is a tape player I'd rather buy a new stereo do you know the code or how I can get it?
Thank you for your help

Answer
If your radio uses the same code system as the U.S. models, I should be able to give you the code if you can give me some information.

Turn the radio off, press and hold the number four button, and while holding the button, turn the radio on.  This should cause dashes to appear in the display (and perhaps a number one in front of the dashes).  I'll need to know the positions of the dashes in the 3x3 array and whether the number one is present.

The following was added to user comments on 6/8/10:
Hi thank you for your response. Sorry for my delay! i have tried to switch on holding the 4 as u suggested but it switches on with the code and the lock in corner after about half an hour the lock comes off this also happens if you input an incorrect no

If you cannot get a pattern to appear in the radio display, that suggests the #4 button isn't working.  You can try with the other buttons as well, but I doubt this will work.  If you're unable to get the dashes to appear, you'll need to go to a Hyundai dealer to retrieve the code.  If you can remove the radio and take the serial number off the radio itself, this may help you avoid charges.  Most of the charges revolve around removing the radio to obtain the serial number.

Lastly, I'll caution to use the follow-up procedure rather than leaving comments to the answer.  I don't view comments nearly as often as my question pool, and follow-ups return as part of the question pool.
