Hyundai Repair: 1998 Hyundai Sonata transmission Problem, torque converter clutch, hyundai sonata

Question
My car starts and runs fine. The problem is the transmission, when I coming to a stop the transmission seems to stay in a higher gear causing the engine to shutter like when you start off in to high of a gear in a manual transmission. The transmission is a rebuilt one from about 1 year ago with +/- 2000 miles. I can't take the car back to the repair shop because they are in another N.C. and I am in S.Fla. When I check the fluid it was at the correct level but it seemed to be heavier than regular ATF, like lite weight oil and greyish in color. Please help. Thanks, Richard

Answer
The grayish color probably indicates that your fluid is burnt or has a large amount of friction material in it.

The condition you describe sounds like the torque converter clutch is staying engaged.  This could be a malfunctioning transmission solenoid, a valve body problem, or a torque converter problem.

If you're still within the warranty period, call the shop where the transmission was rebuilt and ask them how you should proceed for potential warranty service.
