Isuzu Repair: 1999 Honda (Isuzu) Passport, obd ii reader, o reilley

Question
About 1 month ago the engine, while driving just quit, like the key was turned off. No power what so ever, maybe for 5-10 seconds. This continued 5-6 timesin one day and in traffic was pretty hairy. I was told to change the fuel filter as the back pressure from being old maybe tripping an injector sensor and shutting down the engine. I changed the fuel filter and it was fine until last nite. The engine cranked over good and would start and run for about 5 seconds and the "check engine light" would come on and the engine would quit running. I started the engine about 10 times and the same thing. I changed the relays around in the fuse compartment with no change. I'm sure its a sensor as it's like an off switch. Not a miss or rough idol but instant off ! So any suggestions would be appreciated....thanks, Jim ps the car is about 20 miles away and your immediate help would be appreciated. PS What type of Code checker is used on this year Car and what is their cost. Could this problem be detected by a Code checker?

Answer
Hello. First of all I am sorry for the delay. I have been gone for the holidays. This definitely is a peculiar problem. It does sound more like an electrical or sensor problem rather than a mechanical problem. The type of code reader you need is called an OBD II reader. They vary in price but you can get a basic model from O'reilley that is a small handheld unit for about $50-$60. You plug it in and it will give you the code, and then you look in the book for your code. Or, there is a more expensive model (About $200) that actually says on the screen whats wrong. If you'd rather not buy a code reader though, most auto parts stores will check it for free. It is a great investment though to buy one. Check those codes and send me a follow-up, and I will be able to help you more. Sorry I couldn't be of more immediate help, but honestly I need more information.

Just send me a follow up and I'm sure we can work this out.

Best Regards (and good luck!!)
