Isuzu Repair: isuzu rodeo, isuzu rodeo, brake cable

Question
I have a 1998 Isuzu rodeo. I'm having trouble getting it out of park. When I step on the brakes and go to take it out of park and put it in drive, the gear shifter will not move. After steppping on the brake repeatedly and mashing to button it then will come out of park. Any ideas? The brake lights do come on when I push on the pedal.

Answer
Hello. The device that keeps you from shifting without pressing the brake is a cable that disengages a pin in the shifter. It sounds like you just need to adjust this cable. Either that, or the pin in the shifter is broken or loose. Take the cover off of the shifter, and you will see what I'm talking about. step on the brake and see what happens. You should see the mechanism release, but you have to look closely as it is very small. If its not broken, then you may just need to adjust it. I believe it adjusts the same way a bicycle brake cable does. Try that, and if you can't figure it out, or still need help, then send me a follow-up with the details of what you saw.

Best Regards (and good luck!!)
