Hi Howard, thank-you for your helpful info. regarding the shift selector and trans. cable. Could you give me explicit directions on how to remove the center console plate? I would like to know if that is the problem before I take it to anyone, so I don't get ripped off. Thanks again for your help!!  Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,
Remove the center arm rest door and the inner plastic box. Remove all of the plugs from the window switches and the rear window lock switch. Put a piece of tape on each plug and label which plug is which. Remove both ash trays and lift the center console plate up and out. This gives you access to the shift lever and cable.
There is a remote possibility that the cable just came loose at the bottom on the transmission so put the car on a lift and look first. (unlikely, but if it did, you may be able to reconnect it there and not remove the console) plate)
