Land Rover Repair: Land Rover Discovery Engine Swap, land rover discovery, discovery engine

Question
Hi,

I have a 2004 Discovery. In 2008, a year after we bought it, it had the notorious oil pump failure. After some back and forth with Land Rover, it's been sitting for the last 3.5 years.
We've been told the engine is shot. We're looking at replacing the engine now, and have found a 2003 with low mileage (73,000).

My question is what kind of cost are we looking at for swapping out the old engine for the replacement? We will also need the whole thing checked out as its been sitting so long.

Answer
In my opinion, the engines in 2003 and 2004 are all fatally flawed.  The only thing I would do with one of them is rebuild it with flanged liners, which is a $10-12k job for parts, labor and machining costs.  Putting in a used engine is a waste, because that motor you install will probably fail too.  If properly repaired (flanged liners) these are great trucks
