Question
Hi

I have a 1998 Freelander 3dr Tdi (L-series Diesel)
It just started to idle high (just above 1000rpm) and sometimes it would shoot up to between 3000-4000 rpm when ingaging the clutch (when coming to a stop). I have also found that sometimes when idling high if I pump the brake pedal the revs would come down.....any ideas would help.
My car starts fine, everithing seems to be fine for about one minute. Then when I press accelerator with neutral gear the engine's rotations go down very slowly. After another minute or so the idle is going slovly up. When the engine is wormed up iddle is on 3000rpm. when i touch the brake pedal, and the brake lights go on  - the idle goes down to about 1200rpm. I tried to press the brake pedal just a little, but as long as the lights stays off nothing is happening. As soon as the light turns on the rotations go down. I remember when it happend for a first time , the braking did not help. I tried to force it down by braking on first gear  and slowly releasing the clutch but at that time nothing has helped.just recently it appears to work (the brake pedal)
Also during driving, when i accelerate quicky, or I am slowing down by taking the foot of the accelerator - no problem. But when I am somewhere in between (trying to drive economically) the car is giving me jolt, Imagine, Iaccelerate at third gear, by pressing and holding the accelerator in one possition - initially it goes well, but then jolt(slowing down), accelerating - then jolt or twoo slowing down and so on...
Please help
daniel

Answer
Hi Daniel,

this problem seems to be an electrical short.  At first, I thought it had something to do with the throttle position sensor or perhaps the mass air flow sensor.  If it's a short, these two components are being affected.

I'll check my notes to see if Benji sent me a followup with the exact cause of the problem.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
