Land Rover Repair: Gas seems to disappear into the car, rear cargo area, land rover discovery

Question
I have a 2003 Land Rover Discovery S.E. , Recently I have issues with the Gas , I can really see the gas gage moving towards empty,  I am worried that the gas may be going some where else in the engine.  I don't see any leaks under the car.  I hope you can help me.

Answer
Hi Melissa,

do you smell gas fumes from within the vehicle?  The fuel tank is in the rear and there is an access port under the rear cargo area carpet.  You could lift up the carpet, carefully remove the cover and look to see if there is fuel stains or wetness.  BE careful here...it is a highly flammable area and reveals the top of the fuel pump.  Touch nothing, just inspect.  Next, open the hood and determine if there is a gas smell from within the engine compartment. IF you do smell fuel, have it serviced by a LR mechanic as soon as possible.

Usually, if the engine is burning too much fuel and the mixture of air/fuel is not correct, a warning light should appear on your driver dashboard display area.  IF any error messages are stored and you could find a local auto parts store, like Advance Auto in the US, and they usually offer a free service to read these codes.  Most other auto part stores could do this too, you just have to ask.  The codes are general enough that these shops can tell you if there may be a fuel mixture problem.

With that said, when was the last time you had your Disco tuned up?  This involves new spark plugs, HT leads (spark plug wires), oil change, new oil and air filter?  This will make a difference in how much fuel you consume.  Also, how are your tires?  Old, worn tires that are underinflated can impact fuel consumption too.  How about your brakes?  Are the brake discs worn or rusted?  Bad brakes can impact fuel consumption as much as badly worn tires.  Lastly, consider changing the differential gearoil and lubricating under your vehicle.  All of this will help improve your fuel economy.

You can always have the above work done at an independent LR shop (indy shop) and save some $$$.  If you don't have a favourite shop, send me an email.  Include the city you wish to have your Disco serviced and I'll do my best to find you an indy shop.

Best of luck,
